Title: How to fix an iPhone Water Damage, what are the options?
In this blog, we will learn the causes of iPhone water damage and how to check your iPhone water damage. Also, we will let you know the symptoms of water damaged iPhone and what are repair options which you can opt for, and how to decide whether to repair it or buy a new one.
Know your iPhone, is it really Waterproof!
Don’t get into the advertising trap made by Apple to increase its iPhone sales. Though it’s a wonderful tactic to advertise iPhones are water-resistant we need to be aware of what exactly they meant water-resistant to be. iPhones are rated by Ingress Progression, which is called an IP rating. This rating tells customers exactly how water and dust-resistant their phone is, with different specifications for each rating.
iPhones 6s and before are not rated. The iPhone 7, 8, X, XR, and SE 2 have IP67 ratings. This means that these phones are dust-resistant and water-resistant when submerged up to 1 meter in water or less.
Every new iPhone since the iPhone XS (excluding the iPhone SE 2) is rated IP68. Some are designed to be water-resistant when submerged no deeper than 2 meters for up to 30 minutes. Others, like the iPhone 12 Pro, can resist water when submerged up to six meters!
Once again, Apple doesn’t cover liquid damage for iPhones, so we do not recommend intentionally testing these standards on your own!
The below table clarifies which iPhone models can support dust or water resistance
Model | IP Rating | Dust Resistance | Water Resistance |
iPhone 6s & earlier | Not rated | N/A | N/A |
iPhone 7 | IP67 | Complete protection | Up to 1 meter deep for 30 minutes |

How to check whether your iPhone is water damaged?
Many of you may know how to check the water damage on your iPhone from the outside. But, for those who are not aware here is the best way to check for iPhone water damage is to look at its liquid contact indicator or LCI. On newer iPhones, the LCI is located in the same slot as the SIM card. On older models of the iPhone (4s and earlier), you’ll find LCIs in the headphone jack, charging port, or both.
Here’s where you’ll find the liquid contact indicator on every iPhone:

Now that you got an idea of whether your iPhone is water-resistant or not and also you are aware of how to check your iPhone water damage based on your iPhone models. Now, let’s see what are symptoms to identify when your iPhone is water damage.
Symptoms of Water damaged iPhone:
1. Is your iPhone getting heated?
Water-damaged lithium-ion batteries can get very, very hot. Although it’s incredibly rare (especially for iPhones), lithium-ion batteries can catch on fire when they’re damaged. Not to worry this is a very rare condition. But, be very careful if you feel your iPhone is starting to heat up much hotter than normal then it’s better to approach an iPhone repair service centre who can help you deal with the issue and give you suggestions based on the observation.
2. iPhone lost its Sound
When water peeps inside your iPhone chances are more that it would affect the sound system of your iPhone making it dumb meaning you can’t hear any sound even the music is playing on your phone or while your phone is ringing.
3. iPhone isn’t charging
It is one of the most common problems on any phone. If the water gets into iPhone’s charging port then chances are more that the iPhone will not charge. If you observe the LCI indicator you will a red mark that indicates that your iPhone is water damaged.
Don’t do any mischievous things to dry out your iPhone like keeping your iPhone inside the rice bag which will not solve your problem but will increase the problem. Those rice beans get stuck in the charging port and you will not be able to remove them if you don’t have machinery tools to remove them.
4. My iPhone has a sim but isn’t recognizing
Your iPhone might not be able to connect to your cellular network if water has damaged the SIM card slot. One sign that your SIM card or SIM tray has been damaged by water contact is if it says “No SIM” in the upper left-hand corner of your iPhone’s display.
5. iPhone is out of service
If you don’t see any network symbol on the left side then it is understandable that your iPhone is water damage. If the iPhone antenna is affected with liquid drops then it will either have no service or very poor service. You can’t make phone calls if your phone is out of service.
6. iPhone camera isn’t working
The iPhone camera might stop working completely if water comes in contact with the camera. Even if the camera is working, it’s very common for a water-damaged iPhone to take blurry photos. That happens when the lens becomes obstructed by water.
Should I give my iPhone for repair or buy a new one?
Water damage is unpredictable. Remember that the effects of water damage aren’t always immediate. As water migrates inside an iPhone, components that had been working may suddenly stop. It could be days or weeks until problems start to occur.
If you are using an old model iPhone 6s or before models or even iPhone 7 if you think the phone is seriously damaged then it’s better to go with the 2nd option. But we suggest you take the phone to the Apple repair service centre to get expert feedback based on his suggestion. You can make a decision, it’s just that the pricing for repairing a water-damaged iPhone is a bit higher than a new iPhone. When you compare the cost of a new phone to the cost of replacing a single part, sometimes replacing the single part is the way to go. But sometimes it isn’t.
If the rest of your iPhone is in good shape and your phone is relatively new, then a repair maybe your best option, especially if the water-damaged part is a speaker or another relatively inexpensive part.
Replacing the entire iPhone may be the right move if more than one component is broken or it won’t turn on at all. It’ll be less of a headache and maybe cheaper than replacing multiple broken parts.
